Ubud is the cultural centre of Bali. Everything you think of when you think ‘Bali’ other than the beach, it all lies in and around this wonderful town. Hindu temples, jungle, markets, and cute little Indonesian restaurants dressed with lanterns and fairy lights. It really was such a special feeling being in Ubud, and it was the perfect place to finish off my last week in Bali.
I stayed at Puri Garden Hotel. With beautiful gardens and a yoga class every morning followed by a freshly cooked breakfast, it really was the perfect Indonesian retreat.
Starting each day with 7am yoga and ending it strolling around the market or watching the sunset with some traditional Balinese food, Ubud felt like absolute heaven.
My favourite day was when I visited the three sights I’d been so excited about seeing in Bali. After convincing myself the night before that I’d be fine, I was going to hire a scooter to drive around and reach all of them. I thought I’d go and asses the situation first, so I stood by the road watching where the traffic wasn’t so bad and was full of confidence, but then I remembered I’m not very good at steering scooters, so I turned round and headed straight back to the hotel to hire a driver for the day! It might have been five times the price, but I returned safely with no broken limbs and me and my driver Gusti had a great day!
One of the most popular sights of Bali is the many rice fields. I visited Tegallalang Rice Terrace, and it was such an amazing sight.
After reading Eat, Pray, Love (like most other female travellers going it alone in Asia!), I was keen to make my very own Eat, Pray, Love adventure and decided to visit Tirta Empul. Here Balinese Hindus gather for purification in the holy spring waters. The temples in Bali are not as ornate as this in Thailand, but crossing the courtyard to reach the majestic waters gave me a real sense of spiritual feeling and a deep connection with the temple that I had not felt in any others I had visited.
I also stopped off at the Bali swing and it was the most amazing end to the day swinging over the jungle.
